Communication Tools
for Spouses of Deployed Members
There are 2 new ways family members can contact their loved ones
while they are deployed:
USAF Instant Messenger (AFIM)
- Can be accessed through the Air Force Portal (https://www.my.af.mil)
- Enables real-time comm with other AF Portal users to include
family members
- Alerts users when their contacts are on line; allows them to
communicate through private online chat areas
- Enables one-to-one and one-to-many communication
- Major advantage over other instant messengers: Requires no
software to install, and all settings are stored on the server,
making it the easiest Instant Messenger solution for users who move
often between computers
Global Internet Mail (GI Mail)
- Can be accessed at https://www.gimail.af.mil
- A secure means for Airmen and their families to communicate with
each other through e-mail
- Functions in every theater of operations because it's on a
military server with no advertising/extras
- Available to all DoD members worldwide
- Account registration and use of GI Mail is available to users from
any computer with Internet access
- AF eligibility to use the system is determined by the AF
Crossroads interface with DEERS
- Once validated as a member of GI Mail, the account's User-ID and
password can be used to access the system from anywhere in the world

Deployed Voices...
This is a brand new initiative that Public Affairs
will add to the weekly Airlifter. If you are a deployed family and
would like to share your experience associated with your family
separation please call 677-3372, Public Affairs. Public Affairs
would like to run stories on active duty members who are deployed
giving them a chance to speak to loved ones through the paper.
Families will then be able to respond. This is a great initiative.
For more information please give me a call or contact Public Affairs
directly, Lt Neilson at 677-3372. |
